Focus on you

As a small, personalised practice I only work with a small number of clients at a time, so the focus is on you.

Helping you heal and thrive

Academia is a place you have worked hard to get to. However, it can also be a highly pressurised, uncertain and disconnected occupation. In both your personal and professional lives, you may feel frustration, a sense of being completely overwhelmed (‘chasing your own tail’), have difficult relationships with co-workers or not feel a sense of efficacy or purpose. You may be wondering if what you are getting is worth the effort and how to achieve a happy balance between work and other parts of your life. You may also see challenges in your professional life influencing your personal life and vice versa.

To help address these issues, I offer counselling and therapy for academics. My work aims to help academics at all career stages, including PhDs and post-docs, navigate these difficult concerns and live happier, healthier and more sustainable lives.

Effective counselling from an experienced threapist

As part of my specialism around the unique challenges of being an academic, I often support clients facing issues such as anxiety, depression, trauma, self-esteem, personality and relationship difficulties.

My approach combines psychodynamic insight work (which focuses on working with the past and the unconscious) with acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT, which focuses on acceptance and value based action). I have found this combination is helpful both to those new to counselling work, and for those who have tried other approaches (such as CBT) without success.

I offer online counselling via video (as well as face to face sessions in Faversham, Kent). Sessions are 50 minutes in duration, at a time agreed between us.  Evening and early morning sessions are available.

I also offer an initial phone consultation (free and with no-commitment). This lets you get a feel for what is involved and explore how we could work together.

Helping you connect with yourself

My style of counselling is open and relaxed, focussed on creating a safe and confidential space where we can explore together the challenges you face in the context of the past, present and future. I won’t advise you on the ‘best’ course of action, but I can help deepen your self-insight to give you the clarity and grounding you need to heal, grow and thrive. If we feel it is appropriate, we can also develop strategies to help you tackle things quickly – impacting the ‘here and now’ while we build the foundations for a more positive tomorrow.
